Statement of Significance
By no means the oldest Italian cafe in Melbourne, Pellegrini's was nevertheless established in an area already famous for its Italian cafes and restaurants (Florentino, Society, Molina' s, Latin). It is among the first of Melbourne's cafes to feature an espresso coffee machine. Pellegrini's is the oldest built example of the 1950s Melbourne renaissance, inspired by the Olympic Games and supported by the wave of European immigration after World War II. It has a high integrity to that era and has since become one of Melbourne's well-known cultural haunts. The shop front, signage, joinery style and finishes survive as stylish examples of a diminishing group of original late 1940s and 1950s architect-designed interiors.
