Statement of Significance
The Leviathan Clothing Store was built in 1912-13 to a design by architects Bates Peebles and Smart. Designed in the Beaux-Arts idiom the steel-framed "shinning white cement" (as was the nearby and later Myer Emporium). The building was the first of the major emporiums built in Bourke Street, in the first thirty years of this century, which re-established the city as the principle retail area.
