Statement of Significance
The statue is a tribute to Francis Ormond's major contribution to further education in Australia, and, in particular, to the education of working men in Victoria. His commitment to education is also commemorated by a portrait at Ormond College, University of Melbourne and a bust at the Gordon Institute, Geelong. The statue's location at the main entrance of RMIT University, is a fitting reminder of the debt owed by the citizens of Victoria to the foresight and generosity of this enlightened benefactor.
The sculptor, Percival Ball, had a considerable reputation in the execution of public works of art during the latter part of the nineteenth century. Born and educated in England, he was awarded a Gold Medal for a bas relief at the Royal Academy, London in 1866. His work is represented in prestigious collections and galleries both in Australia and the United Kingdom.
