Statement of Significance
Resembling Greek and Italian Byzantine churches, this stuccoed church, with its shaped brick trim, expressed voussoirs and corbelled eaves, was bult in 1929 by T J Armstrong to the design of the architects Gawler and Drummond, for the Adult Deaf Society.
Set in an implied octagonal plan and covered by a Marseilles-pattern hipped roof, the church is set on axis with the main gates of Palmer Square and almost centrally within the square itself: its raised octagonal tower, with centred oculus, is a dominant visual element in both the Square and the building.
It is one of a small group of churches in the Mediterranean style built in the State prior to World War Two, and was at the time a rare example of an interdenominational church in Victoria.
Classified: 03/11/1983
File Note. Chapel is part of Jolimont Square.
