Statement of Significance
Set on a high prominence of the foreshore of Port Phillip Bay, at Portsea, Nyland is significant as a substantial two-storeyed limestone mansion that is a prominent landmark on the Mornington Peninsula.
Nyland was constructed for John Goodall in 1908 using random coursed limestone which was quarried on the six acre site. The wide two-storeyed verandah gives the building a palatial appearance and an air of relaxed living that has been enjoyed by the one family right up to the present day. The house is surrounded by a spacious garden and attractive limestone outbuildings. There is direct access to the beach. Also of significance are the remains of the old lime-burner kilns and the original swimming baths on the foreshore.
