AHC Statement of Significance
The Pumping Station was erected in 1884 by the Railways Department and housed the equipment necessary for obtaining river water for railway engines and to work the hydraulic wool presses on the wharf. The large rectangular brick structure is articulated by a pier and arch system and has simple slender arched windows. A large gabled ventilator protrudes from the slate clad hip roof and there is a projecting gallery along the entrance facade.
This is a fine brick structure with an unusual function. It played an essential role in the running of the riverport during the nineteenth century. The facades are well articulated and designed with sympathetic arched openings. The bricks and brickwork are also notable.
The building is an essential feature in the Echuca riverport precinct and is a fine elememt of this important historic city.
The building is intact and in sound structural condition.
