CAMPBELL SOUTHERN OUTSTATION - History
Heritage Inventory History of Site: The site is part of the Campbell Brothers' Mt Cole property - the first European settlement in the region. Colin Campbell was a prominent settler, being both a member of parliament and an Honorary Correspondent (distributed rations and supplies to Aborigines). Historical records attest to Aboriginal people camping around the property throughout the 1840s, 50s and 60s.
CAMPBELL SOUTHERN OUTSTATION - Interpretation of Site
Heritage Inventory Interpretation: This site was an outstation and as such served as the residence of both shepherds and a hutkeeper. The site appears to have undergone a second phase, or to have been modified in the 1850s. It is interesting to note that 150m northeast of site, on the banks of the Fiery Creek, there is a large Aboriginal artefact scatter, comprising quartz flakes and cores.
