Statement of Significance
Wooriwyrite, a 30 room two storey homestead located on the Mt Emu Creek, near Noorat, was erected in 1883 for western distirct squatter Thomas Shaw. The monumental and severe Italianate style residence, built to replace a late 1840's homestead, was designed by Colac architect Alexander Hamilton. The squared coursed basalt structure is enhanced with fine axed stone quoins, enframed windows, elaborate single storey iron verandah and finely decorated interior.
Wooriwyrite, is an historic early western district run which was developed by influential Scottish born pastoralist Thomas Shaw into the foremost merino sheep breeding establishment in Western Victoria in the 1880s. The homestead building, with notable and intact interiors is one of the foremost works of self-trained architect, Alexander Hamilton. The unusual and massive Victorian Italianate style homestead, constructed at the height of the 1880's wool boom, is one of the largest in Western Victoria.
Wooriwyrite homestead has been sensitively maintained and adapted to current needs. The interior has been largely preserved intact.
