BARWON PARK FORD/BRIDGE - History
Heritage Inventory History of Site: The bridge/ford would appear to be associated with the Austin's 'Barwon Park' homestead. At this stage it is uncertain whether it dates from the time of the original homestead, located adjacent to the Barwon River or the later Mansion House now owned by the National Trust. Further information will appear in the south west gas pipeline fieldwork report.
BARWON PARK FORD/BRIDGE - Interpretation of Site
Heritage Inventory Interpretation: At this stage the date of the ford/bridge is unknown. It appears to have consisted of a track or path surfaced with rounded basalt stone (naturally water worn leading to a red gum log construction in the bed of the river. On the opposite (western) side of the river there existed some sort of basalt structure consisting of at least 2 coursed of basalt structure or support consisting of at lest 2 courses of stone - as TPA ordered the continuation of pipeline trench excavation before this could be properly exposed & recorded it was not possible to determine its structure or purpose. The entire structure was covered by 1.5 - 4 m of river silt.
Heritage Inventory Description
BARWON PARK FORD/BRIDGE - Heritage Inventory Description
A bridge or more likely a ford crossing of the Barwon River north of Winchelsea. The structure is built of basalt stones (inter worn and unshaped) and red gum logs. It was substantially disturbed/destroyed by the construction of the south west gas pipeline crossing of the river./n
Heritage Inventory Significance: Prior to the construction of the pipeline the ford, it would appear, was more or less intact, however much of it has now been removed lessening its archaeological significance (which prior to its destruction could have been statewide). Its date is currently unknown but its presumed association with the Barwon Park property suggests that it could be considered of regional significance for its association with the Austin family.
