Statement of Significance
Bass Hill is 939 feet above sea level, but views from the public road can be seen at 900 feet. The hill is cleared for pasture and provides an undulating, unobstructed foreground to the distant landscape. Subdivisions and buildings above the 700 ft. contour would seriously degrade landscape values. To the west the surface drops in an abrupt escarpment to the lower tract of the Bass River Valley, and the low land adjacent to Western Port Bay. This plain is crossed by an irregular grid of roads and windbreaks. The roads are narrow, but many are lined by Swamp Paper-barks, Melaleuca ericifolia, the growth of which should be encouraged. Distant views extend across the Bay to the Mornington Peninsula, with French Island and Phillip Island clearly defined in the middle distance.
To the south, glimpses of the Bass Strait coastline are dramatic when viewed over the undulating hills which extend to within half a mile of the coast.
To the east and south-east lies the lower Leongatha-Wonthaggi Basin backed by the South Gippsland Hills.
Bass Hill and the surrounding high land is almost totally cleared for pasture; farms apparently are large and few houses are evident. Some old pine trees are standing in the paddocks.
This is the finest viewing point in the Western Port Region.
LOCATION:
6 ½ miles due east of the mouth of the Bass River. The boundary of the area follows the 700 ft. contour line, except where it crosses the ridge at Glen Forbes South School.
