STONEHENGE HUT - History
Heritage Inventory History of Site: The property has been farmed since the 1850s/1870s at least and extensive crop marks exist across the whole paddock, though not in this area. Some of this cropping may be associated with 19th century agricultural practice, but this is uncertain.
STONEHENGE HUT - Interpretation of Site
Heritage Inventory Interpretation: Landowner knows it as a shepherd's hut but associated with "Dowling Forest" squatting run (1838-1860s).* His family started farming the property c.1870s.'If this information is correct, then the site is potentially an outstation pre-dating the mid 1860's. The artefacts, while not diagnostic, are not inconsistent. The earthwork is hard to interpret, but may be a small horticultural plot associated with the structure. * Kenyon and Speedborough and Anderson have the property located in Burrumbeet.
Heritage Inventory Description
STONEHENGE HUT - Heritage Inventory Description
A small building (hut?) with attached dry-stone wall and adjacent cultivation remains located at confluence of two degraded gully channels. The structure is difficult to interpret without detailed investigation, however it consists of a stone hut (chimney?) and adjacent charcoal/artefact rich deposit, possibly a turf/earthen annex.
Heritage Inventory Significance: Local/regional high archaeological significance. High integrity remains of building, occupationdeposit (including artefacts that are possibly pre-1870s), cultivation marks. Possibly associated with the squatting period.
Heritage Inventory Site Features: 1. In situ masonry - granite blocks and mortar 2.5m x 1.0m exposed, height 0.86m. 2. Stone rubble pile, collapse from 1. 3. Vestigial dry-stone wall, partially cording off confluence peninsula. 4. Low mound of dark grey soil, fragments of transfer printed pottery - either a midden or remains of a turf structure with a chimney. 5. Earthworks - comprising 3 parallel mounds and ditches on edge of gully circled by a perimeter ditch. 6. Base of hand-made champagne/wine bottle, not in situ - eroded into gully.Structural complex consisting of: 1. Building 2. Field boundary. 3. Archaeological deposit. 4. Earthworks (cultivation).
