What is significant?
The Buffalo General Store, at 7 Main Street, Buffalo, constructed in c.1894, is significant.
The weatherboard Victorian building with concrete block Interwar additions has features including a gable roof and flat Victorian verandah. The weatherboard section facing McPhee Street includes multi-pane windows and finial at the gable end. Other contributory heritage features include:

- Stain glass panel above main doorway
- Large form windows consistent with Victorian shop fronts
- Interwar shopfront and parapet
Non-original alterations and additions, other than those listed above, are not of heritage significance.
How is it significant?
The Buffalo General Store is of local historic, aesthetic and social significance to the South Gippsland Shire.
Why is it significant?
Historically, although the exact date of construction is unknown, the original building was opened by Mr Barr in early 1894, making the building one of the oldest in the town. The Buffalo General Store demonstrates the early phase of development in Buffalo throughout the Victorian and Interwar periods. (Criterion A)
Aesthetically, it is situated at the entry to the township of Buffalo and is the only commercial building in the township. The store also contributes to the streetscape of Buffalo. (Criterion E)
Socially, the Buffalo General Store contributes to the identity of Buffalo as a township, being the only commercial property within the township. (Criterion G)
