Site first bought by Hugh Glass, 1846. Commercial or Family Hotel built 1850/1. Shown 1850 map: Hoskins Commercial Hotel; 1855 map: Commercial Hotel.1880 Panorama - 3 storey building; 1905: mostly 3 storeys, hotel building.The hotel remained under various names until demolished for the construction of Mitchell House in 1936. Site was associated with the famous firm Cobb & Co., the stables, harness rooms and smithies were situated directly at the rear of the hotel. Coaches left from here for the Ballarat goldfields.
