265-269 ELIZABETH STREET - Heritage Inventory Description
1839 map - building shown on this corner site. 1866 & 1880, building on site. 1888 & 1905 - 3x two-storey buildings; butcher and fruit shop, then restaurant and refreshment rooms. Prior to 1915these two-storey shops owned by Wilsons estate. 1916 - three-storey shop with basement constructed for Michaels Family.
Heritage Inventory Significance: SOURCE: CONSERVATION STUDYHISTORICAL ANALYSISTHE PROPERTY HAS REMAINED IN THE MICHAEL FAMILY SINCE THE EXISTING BUILDING WAS BUILT. THE SON OF EMMANUEL MICHAEL NOW OWNS THE PROPERTY AND HIS SONS NOW WORK IN THE BUSINESS WHICH ORIGINALLY WAS A CHEMIST SHOP. CAMERAS WERE INTRODUCED AS AN ADJUNCT TO THE BUSINESS AND THEIR SOLE CONCERN IS NOW PHOTOGRAPHIC EQUIPMENT. ARCHITECTURAL ANALYSISTHE BUILDING IS AN IMPORTANT STEP IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF MODERN ARCHITECTURE IN MELBOURNE BECAUSE IT IS THE EARLIEST EXAMPLE OF THE INFLUENCE OF THE MODERN SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE DEVELOPING IN GERMANY AROUND THIS TIME. ITS LARGE EXPANSES OF GLASS AND STRONG HORIZONTAL ACCENT REFLECTS THE WALTER GROPIUS AND ADOLF MEYER FAGUS FACTORY OF 1911. HOWEVER, THE BUILDING SEEMS RELUCTANT TO BREAK ENTIRELY WITH THE PAST AND MAINTAINS A DEGREE OF DECORATION IN THE SPANDREL PANELS AND TOP CORNICE WHILE THE CORNER BAY WINDOW STILL HAS AN EDWARDIAN FLAVOUR ABOUT ITS UPPER SECTION. UNFORTUNATELY, THE ARCHITECT AND BUILDER HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO BE ASCERTAINED TO DATE.
