Statement of Significance
This place is included on the Victorian Heritage Inventory, for its potential to contain historical archaeological remains associated with the settlement and growth of early Melbourne. Under the terms of the Heritage Act 2017 there is protection for all historical archaeology sites and objects in the state.

1866 map - building on site. 1888 map - site vacant.Current building (2 storeys) built 1894 by the See Yup society as housing for Chinese. One of a brick pair 16 - 18 Celestial Avenue.1905 map - 2 storey building
Heritage Inventory Significance: Current bulding is unique example of housing/Chinese residences in the city area. All surviving accomodation houses have significance due to the use of Celestial Ave for earliest Chinese occupancies from the beginning of "Chinatown" in 1850's.See Yup Society formed 1854 as liason for Chinese and their homeland (claimed villagers from the Four Districts of China). Acted as Westernising influence and moral force to combat vices of gambling and opium. Organised credit and burials.
