Statement of Significance
This place is included on the Victorian Heritage Inventory, for its potential to contain historical archaeological remains associated with the settlement and growth of early Melbourne. Under the terms of the Heritage Act 2017 there is protection for all historical archaeology sites and objects in the state.

189-191 LONSDALE STREET - Heritage Inventory Description
1866 - building on site. 1880 - single storey building. 1887 - 3 storey buildings, shops and work rooms constructed for owner, W J Lucas. Numerous occupancies by other clubs, including Democratic Club in C.19th; Jewish Lyric Club 1913; Acropolis Club, pre WWII. Other commercial uses tailors, sawmakers, surgical instrument makers. Brief period of public building status as Melbourne Dental Hospital, c.1899-1907.
Heritage Inventory Significance: Current building has housed a series of clubs reflecting the changing residential occupation and ethnic concentrations within this precinct of the city of Melbourne.
