Statement of Significance
This place is included on the Victorian Heritage Inventory, for its potential to contain historical archaeological remains associated with the settlement and growth of early Melbourne. Under the terms of the Heritage Act 2017 there is protection for all historical archaeology sites and objects in the state.

GEORGES - Heritage Inventory Description
May 1838, Presbyterian Church granted 4 allotments (2 acres) on cnr of Collins & Russell Sts. Stone building built 1839, used as school, meeting hall, chapel. (Building shown 1855 & 1866 maps). This building demolished 1870s. 1877 - various buildings; including houses, sheds, yards.1883 - lot vacant. Leased by Presbyterians to Equitable Co-0p Co.1883-4 - current building constructed, extended 1888. 1888 - 4 & 5 storeys, Coffee Palace to Collins St, vacant to Lt Collins St. 1915 - shown as Georges.
