68-70 COLLINS STREET - Heritage Inventory Description
Fourth land sale, 14 Feb 1839, Block 10, Allotment 8, J Flint. 1850and 1866 - building on site. Current building constructed 1867 as doctor's residence (Dr. John Wilkins). 1888 - 3 storey building, 1 & 2 storeys at rear, Rudall. 1905 - 3 storey building (2 storeys at rear), D Hooper, Surgeon.Building occupied by doctors until 1911.
Heritage Inventory Significance: HISTORIC BUILDINGS COUNCIL - STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: A THREE STOREY DOUBLE FRONTED HOUSE OF FINE PROPORTIONS, PARTICULARLY NOTEWORTHY FOR THE FINELY RENDERED STUCCO DETAILING. THE REAR SECTION WAS FORMERLY A SEPARATE HOUSE WITH ITS ENTRANCE ON EXHIBITION STREET. IT IS ONE OF THE THREE IMPORTANT TOWN HOUSES REMAINING IN THE CITY. THE OTHER TWO ARE PORTLAND HOUSE AND 61 SPRING STREET. THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT BUILDING AND IT IS A GREAT PITY THAT IT HAS NOT YET BEEN POSSIBLE TO ESTABLISH WHO THE ARCHITECT WAS. THE BUILDING IS PARTICU- LARLY NOTEWORTHY FOR ITS FINE VENETIAN REVIVAL STYLE DETAILING, PARTICULARLY THE FIRST FLOOR WINDOWS AND RUSTICATED GROUND FLOOR.
