FRENCH ISLAND RECREATION CAMP - History
Heritage Inventory History of Site: The prison farm, originally a tent city, was established at Mc Leod in 1915, on land that was set aside by State Forests for a pine plantation. Extra land was obtained in 1921 to facilitate a rehabilitation program involving the teaching of farming skills. Permanent buildings, with cells for 127 prisoners, were erected in 1946. The prison closed in 1975 and the site was leased to French Island Tours Pty Ltd.Heritage Inventory Description
