House, 303 McCahons Road, GOWAR EAST - Physical Description 1
The house, 303 McCahons Road, Gowar East, is located within a rural setting. The immediate surrounds consist of open grassed areas and perimeter garden beds, with an outbuilding and mature cypresses towards the rear. Nearby the house are remnants of an early timber bridge that crosses the creek.
The asymmetrical, elevated single storey, horizontal timber weatherboard, Victorian Picturesque styled house is characterised by a hipped roof form, together with a gable roof that projects towards the front and a return bullnosed verandah that projects to the front and side. These roof forms are clad in galvanised corrugated iron. The face brick chimneys that adorn the roofline appear to have been altered or added, particularly those chimneys with soldier course tops which suggest that they were constructed during the interwar (c.1920s-1940s) period. Narrow overhangs with paired timber brackets adorn the roofline.
An early feature of the design is the projecting gabled bay under the front gable. Both the gabled bay and main gable are decorated with early elaborate timber bargeboards.
The timber framed double hung windows and the timber framed doorway with sidelights represent other early features.
The stop chamfered timber verandah columns may be early, although the integrity of the decorative timber valance and brackets is not known.
The timber weatherboard enclosure within the corner of the verandah has been introduced.
