Statement of Significance
The Major Mitchell Memorial, intersection of Bolangum Inn and Kanya Roads, Kanya, has significance as a monument to the exploration of this part of Victoria by Major Thomas Mitchell, Surveyor-General of the Colony of N.S.W., and his party, in 1836. This monument forms part of a chain of Mitchell memorials throughout Victoria and, after War Memorials, are the most common form of public commemoration in the region.
The Major Mitchell Memorial, intersection of Bolangum Inn and Kanya Roads, Kanya, is historically and socially significant at a LOCAL level. It is associated with commemorating the expedition through the western plains of Victoria by Major Thomas Mitchell, Surveyor General of the Colony of N.S.W., and his party, in 1836. It also has associations with the district residents of Kanya who erected it in 1936 in celebration of the centenary of the expedition. The Memorial is recognised by the district as a significant legacy of this critical part of early 19th century Australian exploration.

The Major Mitchell Memorial, intersection of Bolangum Inn and Kanya Roads, Kanya, has a rural bushland setting. The Memorial comprises random stonework forming a broad, rudimentary cairn on an elevated random stone base. Centrally positioned on the lower part of the memorial is a plaque that reads: "The Expedition of Major T.L. Mitchell Camped Here 12th to 16th July 1836. Erected by the District Residents in 1936." Below this plaque is a Bicentennial plaque that reads: "Accurate mapping of Major Thomas Mitchell's expedition has revealed that he camped about 2.5 km south of here on 11 July, 1836. Major Mitchell's expedition into the 'Australia Felix' is commemorated by the Major Mitchell Trail, an Australian Bicentennial project with financial assistance from the Commonwealth and Victorian Governments."
