STARLINGS GAP MILL SITE - History
Heritage Inventory History of Site: In June 1920 the Victoria Hardwood Co. formed the Ada RiverTimber Co. and took over the Starlings Gap mill from the Warburton Timber Co. Timber from this mill was taken by a horse hauled 3 foot gauge tramway to Big Pats Creek, and then to LaLa siding at Worburton. The Ada River Company no longer used this railway after the High Lead inclines were opened in 1927.Heritage Inventory Description
STARLINGS GAP MILL SITE - Heritage Inventory Description
The major feature of this site is a large sawdust heap, 50 metres across and 6 metres high. Along the south west boundary of the sawdust heap, erosion and bottle collectors have exposed a large amount of domestic rubbish, including glass, cermaic and bones, which apparently dates to the 1920s to the 1950s. The course of the tramway is evident. The site of the mill building may have been destroyed by road works. A picnic area is situated at the top of the gap.
Heritage Inventory Significance: Regional.
