VICTORIAN MOUNT MORGAN MINE - History
Heritage Inventory History of Site: Impressive gold yields were obtained by Robert Clingan and party from the Victoria Mount Morgan Mine in early 1896. The geological formation at this site differed from other mines in the Upper Yarra region, consisting of bands of Silurian sandstone and mudstone, impreganted with pyrites in which the gold was held. The pyrites had weathered near the surface producing a dark ironstone, similar in appearance to Queensland's Mount Morgan, thus giving the mine its name. The mine employed up to twenty five people at the turn of the century. A water race was cut and a Pelton wheel installed. The mine was briefly worked again after the 1939 fires when three men attempted to drive the tunnel further towards Walshs Creek.Sources:Parkinson, E., "Warburton Ways", 1984, Signs Publishing Co., Warburton.1981, "Brief History of the Upper Yarra"VICTORIAN MOUNT MORGAN MINE - Interpretation of Site
