BROWN'S CAMP - History
Heritage Inventory History of Site: Sluicing in this area began in February 1862 when Cornelius Donovan and his party commenced operations on Donovans Creek. By 1863 it was estimated there were 300 to 400 workers in the region. Some features of Browns Camp may date from this early period.Source: MMBW, "A Brief History of the Upper Yarra", 1981.Heritage Inventory Description
BROWN'S CAMP - Heritage Inventory Description
Brown's Camp was a small mining settlement which serviced the Bears Creek-Donovans Creek sluicing areas. Seven or eight hut sites are recognisable. There are several bottle dumps which have been raided by collectors. A water race leads from the Camp to Bear's Creek and a track follows Bears Creek from the Camp past the Jumbo Wolfram Mine and several old campsites, machinery and trolley tracks associated with the mine. There is also evidence of timber procurement in the vicinity of the mine.
