MISSISSIPPI NO.1 MILL - Heritage Inventory Description
The site was visited by the writer and a party of LRRSA members in the winter of 1984. Several weekends were spent mapping the tramways in the valley. At this time the forest was still recovering from the Ash Wednesday bushfires and access from either Big Creek Road near the Federal Short Cut or from Mississippi Track was feasible. At the time of the visit, logging of the south side of Mississippi Creek had just been completed. Today, the valley is surrounded by either forest with a understorey of thick post-fire scrub or a dense regrowth of young regenerated Ash. Packs with equipment for an overnight stay could not be carried through this type of bush, and it was felt that many repeated trips into the mill site with day-packs for the sake of a measured drawing represented a waste of the resources available for the present project. As the archaeological importance of the site is tied to the features distributed over the length of the upper Mississippi valley, the 1984 survey produced enough results for an assessment of significance to be made.No further logging along Mississippi Creek has taken place since 1984 and the site will be little different today than when this survey as carried out.
