SOLFERINO MINES - Heritage Inventory Description
The site consists of a number of exploratory shafts; two main vertical shafts further down the valley; mullock heap; a horizontal drive which is about 50 metres long and flooded; the remains of original log hut. The road into mine is still evident. Near the vertical shaft is some stone walling which may be the remains of John Merlo's original house.
Heritage Inventory Significance: Regional. The site is associated with a prominent settler and dating from the early period of mining. This site is critical in understanding the history of the land now included in the Fraser National Park.
