CONTENTION MINE - History
Heritage Inventory History of Site: The Contention Mine was first worked around 1895, to a depth of four to five metres, employing about nine men. The machinery and the battery were lowered down from the Woods Point Road, and the hauled to the mine by horses. The mine prospered and was one of the richest in the Upper Yarra region during the early years of the century. The mine was worked by several groups until its closure in 1938. The water wheel operated at the Contention Mine was later moved to provide power at the Upper Yarra Hotel. Parts of the water wheel have been incorporated in a replica built by the MMBW and is now displayed at the Upper Yarra Dam.Sources: Parkinson, E., "Warburton Ways", 1984.Heritage Inventory Description
