KIRCHUBEL'S TRAMWAY AND BRIDGES - History
Heritage Inventory History of Site: H Kirchhubel relocated his mill from Moondarra to the western Tanjil Valley as part of the Forest Commission's salvage operation. A combination steel/wooden branch of the tramline was constructed to the mill. This was the last mill to operate in the Tanjil Bren area, closing in 1952. The mill's equipment included a large lathe which was used to repair equipment for the Tanjil Haulage Co. which operated the main steel tramway to Tanjil Bren.Heritage Inventory Description
KIRCHUBEL'S TRAMWAY AND BRIDGES - Heritage Inventory Description
Short 2km section of tramway, reportedly containing 18 trestle bridges. Six of the bridges have been surveyed. Bridge No.1 still in good condition. Bridge No.5 may have been destroyed during road construction. Bridges Nos. 6 & 7 quite impressive pig-sty bridges built on curves. Bridge No.4 also impressive. No.8 in very poor condition as one of main bearers has collapsed. No. 4, 6 & 7 retain sleepers and rails in some places.
Heritage Inventory Significance: Regional. This tramline was the longest in the area and the most bridged, representing a major engineering achievement.
