Water Commission House, 74 Newall Street, MARNOO - Physical Description 1
The Water Commission house in Newall Street, Marnoo, neighbours other predominantly single storey, horizontal weatherboard residential buildings with pitched galvanised corrugated iron roofs. This building is generally in accord with the form, construction and setbacks of the significant places visually connected to it. It is set on averaged sized allotment for the area with a sizeable front setback and narrow side setbacks, having a gravelled driveway along the side. There is a rudimentary front garden that consists of a grassed area (with brick borders in some areas), perimeter plantings and other trees and shrubs. The front is bound by an early timber post, tubular steel and cyclone wire fence, and a tubular steel and cyclone wire gate, which are both approximately 1200 mm high. The design of the house suggests that it was constructed in the early 20th century.
The single storey, single fronted, horizontal weatherboard, early 20th century Bungalow styled house is characterised by a simple broad gambrel roof form, with a recessed porch under the front corner. This roof form is clad in overpainted galvanised corrugated iron. An early unpainted red brick chimney (possibly altered) adorns the roofline. Wide overhangs with exposed timber rafters are features of the eaves.
A feature of the design is the recessed corner porch. It is adorned with a broadly arched timber fretwork valance supported by a timber column at the corner. The upper reaches of the walls above the porch have been clad in panelling. Other early features of the design include the timber framed double hung windows, timber framed doorway with sidelights and the timber framed portal window at the front.
