Statement of Significance

The oldest existing and most elaborate early public building in the region. A solid building of an interesting design.
A well found substantial brick courthouse building, prominent carbels, pediment gable and round window heads, recalling the work of Paxton and in the idiom of the Villa Rustica. (National Trust Citationas quoted by Tansley, 1978)
The Courthouse is an important example of both the work of the Public Works Department (PWD) and of this form of Courthouse. It forms an important part of the townscape of Lilydale, has historical associations with the settlement and growth of both town and district and is architecturally important as a notable example of Italianate Classical revival design. This structure forms an important contrast in detailing with the near identical Steiglitz Courthouse. (RNE, 005702)

      Court House - Physical Description 1

      A building of Italianate proportions constructed of solid hand-made brick with a slate roof. Elaborate front porch. Minimal alterations. (Tansley, 1978)
      The gabled, symmetrical central section is constructed of face brickwork and has an elaborate timber verandah with paired corner columns, surmounted by a pedimented gable with prominent eaves brackets and a round headed top light. There is a prominent chimney and there are side wings. (RNE, 005702)
