RAZORBACK BATTERY - History
Contextual History:History of Place:
Heritage Inventory History of Site:
The Razorback Syndicate held a lease at the western end of Razorback Reef from about 1895 until 1903. They installed a battery by 1900 (probably earlier), crushing for their own and other mines in the vicinity. The battery was sold in 1903 to a party working the Unique Reef (at the foot of Bon Accord Spur on Washington Creek), and tramway was constructed between that mine and the battery. The Unique mine ceased production in about 1905.
RAZORBACK BATTERY - Interpretation of Site
The Razorback mine shows a complex set of features (level and inclined tramways) connecting the mine workings near the ridge to the batterym at the closest position to the mine with sufficient water for power and crushing purposes. The complexity is dictated by the topography. The delivery pipe for the Pelton Wheel is buried for its entire length, to stop freezing in winter.
Heritage Inventory Description
RAZORBACK BATTERY - Heritage Inventory Description
The Razorback battery comprises of the remains of a ten head stamp battery, Pelton wheel and piping, remants of tables, blacksmiths forge, anvil and probable hut site.
Heritage Inventory Significance: The site has scientific significance because of its rarity and intactness.
The site is extensive, covering mine workings (trenchings, adits etc) that straddle the Razorbacks ridge, a network of inclined and level tramways, water races and the Razorback battery site. The battery site is in a gorge about 1 kilometre below the Razorback, and contains a standing 10-head battery, Pelton Wheel & piping, remnants of tables, blacksmiths forge, anvil, and probable hut sites. Remnants of at least one inclined tramway headsheave have been located, but several more probably exist. Site needs more investigation.
