PORT FAIRY-HAMILTON ROAD BRIDGE & FORMER ROAD - History
Port Fairy was frequented by early sealers and whalers in the early 19th century and developed into a township after the introduction of the short lived Special Survey scheme. In 1847 pre-emptive rights were introduced and followed by closer settlement schemes in attempts to break up the large landholdings of squatters. Transportation between inland pastoral holdings and the coastal port would have become more reliable in the mid-late 19th century.
