Statement of Significance
The bridge over Waurn Ponds Creek, Waurn Ponds was built in 1868 of locally quarried limestone with bluestone detailing. It is a finely detailed small single span segmentally arched structure with an integral stone parapet and curved wing walls. It was designed by Andrew McWilliams from the Shire of Barrabool, and constructed by Clement Nash.
The bridge over Waurn Ponds Creek is of architectural and historic significance to Victoria.
The bridge is important to Victoria's history as it is amongst the earliest stone arch bridges built in the state.
The bridge is of architectural significance for its demonstration of fine craftsmanship in the use of locally available Waurn Ponds limestone, which has a limited usage as a construction material. The bridge has dressed, stepped voussoirs and it also demonstrates an unusual form of bridge decoration in the incorporation of an elaborately carved bluestone key stone on the bridge's northern face. The keystone depicts the Shire of Barrabool's coat of arms and the inscription "BARRABOOL SHIRE 1868". The bridge at Waurn Ponds is the only known example of keystone ornamentation applied to this type of structure.
