SQUATTLESEA MERE HOMESTEAD SITE - History
Contextual History:History of Place:
Heritage Inventory History of Site:
This site was the location of the Squattlesea Mere homestead. Squattlesea Mere was the squatting run on the Eumeralla River occupied from 1844 by Thomas Browne (alias Rolf Bodrewood). Browne was superintendent for absentee licences in Sydney, and he took up the 32,000 acre run with 1,200 cattle. From 1851 to 1862 Browne was himself the licence holder. As Rolf Boldrewood, Browne is most famous for his novel ‘Robbery Under Arms’, first published in 1887.
Three different houses, the first of which is supposed to have been erected in the 1850s were sited here, with sundry farm structures.
The site was occupied until recent years, when the last of the houses, a 20th century structure, was removed to a new location in Port Fairy.Heritage Inventory Description
SQUATTLESEA MERE HOMESTEAD SITE - Heritage Inventory Description
/nEarly squatter homestead. Today, a steed shed and the ruinous remains of a weatherboard farm building survive. Surface scatter of bricks, concrete and stone footings is the archaeological evidence for the location of the three houses at the site. There are several ornamental trees on site, the largest of which is an elm
Heritage Inventory Significance:/nThe site has some archaeological potential to reveal evidence of the early squatting period, but is considered to have little intrinsic heritage significance relevance to similar but better preserved sites in Victoria.
