COTTAGE (2) RUINS - History
The owner of these cottage ruins, Mr Gavin Rowe, believes they are the oldest surviving cottages in the Sutherlands Creek area. This claim requires further verification.Heritage Inventory Description
COTTAGE (2) RUINS - Heritage Inventory Description
A complex of structures, consisting of a one-room cottage, a dairy/coolroom and a second cottage. Probably the earliest structure is a one-room cottage, constructed of bluestone, set in mud mortar. The walls are partly of regularly coursed masonry and partly of random rubble construction. The interior of the walls appear to be random masonry. The wall interiors were originally covered by a thin, irregular render but were later coverd by a thick, smooth lime mortar render. A large fireplace is set in the north wall. Abutted against the south side of the cottage is a small skillion room, with at least two steps leading down into it. There is a coarse cement/concrete paving along the east side of the cottage, which is very worn. To the south east is a circular cistern, constructed of bluestone, plastered on the interior. Further to the south east is a well built bluestone chimney, of regularly coursed, dressed masonry, laid in lime mortar. There is no trace of any further structure associated with this, apart from a concrete slab on the west side, in front of the fireplace. There is a one metre gap between the chimney structure and a small bluestone structure, that consists of a single room. This was also built of regularly coursed, dressed bluestone. It appears to have been partially subterranean and was probably a dairy/coolroom.
The site has been partly disturbed and much rubbish has been dumped. There are a few artefacts evident. The site appears to have low archaeological potential, its main significance probably being in the early cottage and the evidence for later development of the site, when the later buildings were added.
