MOUNT ORIENT BATTERY AND MINE SITE - History
The general area has been subject to shallow alluvial mining on the river flats followed by deep lead mining and dredging. Quartz mining occured away from the river flats and the battery was established to process ore from the Mt Orient Mine (formerly the Shouldn't Wonder mine) to the west some 800 to 1600 metres away. By 1925 the tramline connecting the mine to the battery had been removed but the battery seems to have still been operating. Since then the area has been utilized as a pine plantation with several phases of planting and harvesting.MOUNT ORIENT BATTERY AND MINE SITE - Interpretation of Site
Battery site with associated mine shafts and water races. Relates to the quartz reef minng of the Freeburgh goldfield.
MOUNT ORIENT BATTERY AND MINE SITE - Archaeological Significance
The site is assessed as having no/low archaeological potential due to extensive disturbance post-mining.
MOUNT ORIENT BATTERY AND MINE SITE - Historical Significance
The battery is associated with the Mt Orient Mine, one of the richest mines in the Freeburgh area, although not as rich as some of the other mines in the Upper Ovens Goldfield. Nothing is known of the history of the mine shafts. The site is assessed as having medium local historical significance becasue of this association with the Mt Orient Mine and the quartz mining period of the goldfield.
