HAYMARKET SALEYARDS SITE - History
The site contains a large water tank (approximately 60ft long, 33 ft wide, 10 ft wide). The tank collected water pumped from the bay for the purpose of flushing channels and watering roads. The tank was surrounded by an earthen embankment and wire fence. Works commence 28 November 1896.
An 1854 map indicates that from the 1850s the site was also used for housing, animal pens, weighing stations and various sheds.
HAYMARKET SALEYARDS SITE - Interpretation of Site
Site used for various civic functions from around the 1850s. Assisted with part of the towns watering system by the mid 1890s. Maps from 1854 adn 1912 show housing allotments, as well as animal pens, weighing stations and various sheds.
HAYMARKET SALEYARDS SITE - Archaeological Significance
Although little is known at this stage, the potential for the site to contain deposits relating to 19th century housing, watering systems, and animal sales is high. Uneven surfaces suggest the existance of subsurface deposits.
