YORK STREET TO BROGDEN COURT HISTORICAL PRECINCT - History
First built in 1861 as sludge channels, then deepened and widened in the 1870s after the regular flash flooding of the 1860s. Walls were erected in the 1890s and channel lining took place in the early 20th century. The channels of the area were essential for hygiene, mining and structural development, particularly after heavy mining debris destroyed much of the natural water courses and heavy rains caused detrimental flooding.YORK STREET TO BROGDEN COURT HISTORICAL PRECINCT - Archaeological Significance
Moderate archaeologicla significnace due to the potential to contain hisotric fabric relating to the construction and use of the channel, and other depsoitsrelating tohistoric activities in the township.

Moderate historical significance for association with development of civic infrastructure from mid 19th century.

The water channel reflects various different phases of use and construction. Wooden fabric is likely to relate to the gold and post-gold rush period, and concrete construction relates to mid-late 20th cnetury.

YORK STREET TO BROGDEN COURT HISTORICAL PRECINCT - Heritage Inventory Description
Site includes reserve with extant water channel that is lined in some sections with brick and bluestone, along Canadian Creek. May be sub-surface deposits containing domestic rubbish, and may also be wooden planks and stumps from a revetment or original channel. May be gold mining and other 19th century refuse as well.
