FORMER MAIN SOUTH ROAD GATEHOUSE - History
Whitelaw township was planned around the Great Southern Railway station at Whitelaw. The town ship never developed. Allotment 10 Section C was the site of the only building constructed as a shop and residence in Whitelaw, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Lithgow. A wine and spirit license was granted to these premises. House was 32'x47' with a verandah and 5 rooms, each with imitation marble fireplaces. Mr. Strickland was the architect and Mr. Thomas Lahiff the contractor (White 1988:68-69). It was later used as a gatehouse for Main South Road prior to WWII (Doug Boston, pers com).FORMER MAIN SOUTH ROAD GATEHOUSE - Interpretation of Site
The site was identified as being the location of a gatehouse in operation prior to WWII (Doug Boston, pers com). The house may have been Lithgow's shop and reidence, the only recorded house built in Whitelaw township on Allotment 10 section C (see historic plan with site card). This allotment has been fenced, levelled and planted. The poplars were likely at the front of the house facing Main South Road. If this is the Lithgow Shop it was granted a wine and spirit license, and would likely have a dump nearby.
