US Airforce Base Camp - Veterans Description for Public
A Second World War Airforce Complex was located on Cape Nelson Road, Portland. The site was used by the US as a base camp and radar station to monitor marine activities during the event of a feared Japanese invasion and to transmit messages. The complex had several defensive features including a three-sided lookout structure, gun mount, tunnel and air-raid shelter. The site in present location of Pedolie House - was built on the original slab where the lookout and gun mount stood. When the Australian military decided Japanese invasion would not occur, the structures were pulled down or abandoned.
