Rockbank Communications Base - Veterans Description for Public
The Rockbank Communications base was established around the Second World War as one of several navigation facilities used by the RAAF in conjunction with Point Cook Laverton Air Fields. It operated until the late 1980's when most of the equipment and radio masts were removed.

/nA number of concrete foundations and mast bases located on discrete sites across the Defence land. Formed from off form mast concrete set in excavations (some to bedrock) some concrete blocks have been removed also some ground areas from residual herbicide under aerial sites.
Heritage Inventory Significance:/nThe remnants of the Rockbank Radio base, one of local significance for historical associations with post WW II military communications, a key feature of Melbourne's west, also noted at Diggers Rest and Point Cook, Laverton bases.

Heritage Inventory Key Components: /nConcrete base and cable slay anchors, remnants of cable housing. The masts and aerials have all been removed. NB communications base buildings./nHeritage Inventory Site Features: /nGroups of concrete blocks (see plan A, B, C) in triangular formation each block c. 1 m x 50 cm with 4 bolts. Central block with single bolt and lead bearing plate. One group (Group C) slightly larger and pulled out of the ground. A large concrete block (D) 2 m x 3 m x 1 m high. Bare ground (E) at site of former mast aerial, wires and steel anchors in ground, evident use of residual herbicide.
