Veterans Description for Public
Former Maribyrnong Battery - Veterans Description for Public
A former naval battery stood on the west bank of the Maribyrnong between Henderson's Piggery and The Ship Inn. The battery is shown in Gill's watercolour of Hendersons' Piggery in 1873, which shows three timber sheds surrounded by a stone wall, and a flagstaff on the river end of the site. The Summary Contracts Book of the Public Works Department records that this site was used as a depot for test firing torpedoes in the 1870's. It is speculated that the installation of this facility may also have coincided with the advent of government shipbuilding activities directly across the river.
