Statement of Significance
Sole surviving section of a major tramway used to supply wombat state forest timber to Castlemaine and Bendigo. It was built by a regionally significant sawmiller who played an important part in the local community.

WHEELER'S TRAMWAY - History
JAMES H WHEELER ESTABLISHED A SAWMILL IN THE HEAD OF KANGAROO CREEK IN 1871. A TRAMWAY WAS CONSTRUCTED FROM THE MILL NORTH TO THE DAYLESFORD-MALMSBURY ROAD. IT WAS BUILT ON THE PRINCIPAL AND STRINGER METHOD TO A GAUGE OF 5'3" AND OPERATED WING HORSE TEAMS. IN 1880 THE RAILWAY FROM CARLSRUHE TO DAYLESFORD WAS COMPLETED, CUTTING THROUGH WHEELER'S TRAMWAY ONLY ONE MILE NORTH OF THE MILL. THE TRAMWAY NORTH OF THE RAIL LINE WAS ABANDONED AND THE SOUTHERN SECTION DIVERTED INTO THE STATION YARD. THE MILL CLOSED IN 1892.WHEELER'S TRAMWAY - Interpretation of Site
THE CUTTINGS OF THE FORMATION WERE ORIGINALLY PART OF AN OUTLET TRAMWAY CONNECTING WHEELER'S SAWMILL ON KANGAROO CREEK WITH THE DAYLESFORD-MALMSBURY ROAD.
