TWO MILE HILL WELLS - History
ONLY RECORDS INDICATE HUGH BLACK APPLIED FOR LICENCE OVER SPRING AREA IN 1869, HENCE EXERTING CONTROL OVER WATER RIGHTS AND ACCESS. NEIGHBOURS OBJECTED, SAYING THIS WAS A GOOD AND ESSENTIAL SUPPLY OF DRINKING WATER. BLACK WAS FORCED TO ESTABLISH PERMANENT ACCESS, HENCE A "ROAD" LEADING TO THE SPRINGS AREA STILL EXISTS. THIS AREA COULD HAVE PROVIDED WATER TO THE FIRST SELECTORS/SETTLERS IN THE TWO MILE HILL AREA FROM 1851 WHEN GOLD WAS DISCOVERED/REPORTED AT CLUNES. IF THE SPRINGS FLOWED NATURLALY BEFORE THIS TIME THEY WERE CERTAINLY SIGNFICANT TO ABORIGINAL INHABITANTS. DIFFERENT CONSTRUCTION PERIODS ARE PLAUSIBLE.Heritage Inventory Description
