OLD COAST ROAD, YAMBUK - History
ROAD SURVEYED IN 1842 BY KENNEDY. GOVERNMENT BEGAN IMPROVING ROADS IN AREA IN 1848 AND ALTERNATIVE ROUTES FOUND.
Portland & Port Fairy were linked by road only from 1842. The choice of following the coast allowed horses and wagons to ford the creeks and smaller rivers at their mouths by crossing at the beach. Until 1948, the early travellers and whalers who moved through the area used this road, after which time the first Government proceeded to improve conditions.
