Traynors Lagoon War Memorial Obelisk - Veterans Description for Public
The Traynors Lagoon War Memorial, off Cope Cope Marnoo East Road, is an obelisk memorial to the local soldiers who fought the First World War. Sixty-eight men served from the Traynors Lagoon district, twelve of whom were killed. It is appropriate that Traynors Lagoon's war memorial should be so close to the Mechanics Institute Hall, a social and intellectual centre of the town. The first librarian of the Institute, Mr. Marcus Wells inscribed the Institute's own honour roll which was unveiled with the War Memorial by Chaplain Neville of Geelong in June 1919. Chaplain Neville claimed the memorial was 'the first to be unveiled in the Commonwealth.'
