OCCUPATION STOCK CROSSING SITE - History
The North East Railway, the first connecting Victoria and New South Wales, was constructed in sections over 1872-73 (Moloney 2003). It is likely that the extant occupation crossing appeared around this time, although it may have been upgraded or re-constructed in subsequent years. The need for a stock crossing reflects the largely agricultural function of the Craigieburn area in the late 19th century. The site demonstrates the impact of growing rail networks on pastoral Victoria.
OCCUPATION STOCK CROSSING SITE - Interpretation of Site
The site consists of a rectangular platform of basalt boulders to either side of the tracks, with a defined path to control stock crossing on the western side. The central section has been removed for the construction of a new standard gauge rail line and the installation of phone cables. The remaining portion may date to as early as 1872 and the construction of the original line, although it is likely that some renovation has since occurred.
OCCUPATION STOCK CROSSING SITE - Archaeological Significance
The site has limited potential for providing information beyond that which can be derived from the extant construction. Careful examination maydemonstrate the construction method and the nature of any renovations.
OCCUPATION STOCK CROSSING SITE - Historical Significance
The site is of some significance through its relation to the late 19th century Victoria to NSW railway line, and as an illustration of the pastoral response to this development.
