YANAKIE HOMESTEAD - History
In 1850 Richard Bennison squatted on two runs at Yanakie known repsectively as Old Yanakie and Yanakie Head Run. In 1852 Bennison applied for the two runs and was granted the lease on them. Bennison built a small house on the open plain just on the northern fringe of the sand hummocks and this was to be a homestead for almost a century. In Bennison's time the Old Yanakie Run comprised 17,000 acres and the Yanakie Head station a similar area. By late 1858 the leases of the two Yankie runs were in the hands of Hugh Reoch and they were managed for him by J Maxwell and R Drew.
In 1860 Reoch amalgamated the two runs into the Yanakie Run. In 1861 Reoch sold it to his two managers Maxwell and Drew.
