YARRA RIVER ENTRANCE STONE WALL WESTERN BANK - History
This wall is shown in an 1879 plan of the area, and again in 1894 (Cox) labelled as an old stone wall.YARRA RIVER ENTRANCE STONE WALL WESTERN BANK - Interpretation of Site
The wall appears to have been originally installed as part of land reclamation works to fill in a former bay between the Williamstown Steam Ferry Landing and the current Oil wharves site. Local divers (John Howell, MAAV) have reported the remains of the seawall are still visible underwater a few metres north ofthe Old Yarra River Course Stone Embankments (H7822-0430). The site is important due to the potential earlier timber fabric beneath the current wall.
Heritage Inventory Description
YARRA RIVER ENTRANCE STONE WALL WESTERN BANK - Heritage Inventory Description
The wall is still evident from the Caltex jetty northwards (except where the modern jetties have been built), but appears to have been removed southwards from this point, probably due to the installation of the Newport Oil and Coal wharves.
