A set of concrete steps leads down to the waterline at this site. A former guard post was located here and a boomgate was lowered every night at 6pm during WWII to prevent unauthorised access to the explosives factory further upstream until 6 am each morning (Somerville, pers comms; Ford, 1984:14). This was the only example of a riverfront boomgate guardpost encountered in the study region, Port Phillip, and Victoria (so far), and is related to the defence and explosives landscapes in the region.
